For Those in Need of Sacraments
Anointing of the Sick
Anyone who begins to be in danger of death due to illness or old age has the right to receive this Sacrament of healing from a priest. Although our priests are happy to give anointing of the sick on request, if you or a loved one is unable to travel to a church, you may call the parish office at 219-872-9196 to have a priest come and impart this Sacrament. Outside of parish office hours, if the need is urgent, call the office and follow the prompt to access our emergency line.
Holy Communion for the Homebound
Reception of Communion for the homebound is available for you or your loved one by calling the parish office at 219-872-9196. Local care facilities are also visited regularly by lay ministers, with a weekly Eucharistic service held at some.
Confession for the Homebound
Please call the parish office at 219-872-9196 if you or a loved one are unable to travel to a church for confession, and a priest will be scheduled to visit for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
For Those in Need of Food or Other Necessities
Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary’s
Location – on the corner of 10th & Buffalo Streets in Michigan City
Hours – Wednesdays, 9:30–11:30am | Fridays, 4:30–6:30pm
The Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary exists to provide nutritious food, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, and over the counter medications to people in need. We serve the citizens of Michigan City who have the greatest need without regard to race, creed, or ethnicity. We do this through the generosity of donors and the many people who volunteer their time. While there are other food pantries in Michigan City, the Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary is the only one with evening hours thereby serving people who work during the day. We are the only pantry offering over the counter medications to our clients. As of 2022, the pantry has served 846 different families affecting 2,940 individuals.
We currently have 38 dedicated volunteers. From shopping for dairy items, picking up donations from the collection bins and local retailers, receiving and weighing donations, sorting fresh produce, stocking shelves, and assisting clients during pantry hours, our volunteers are vital to the success of the pantry. We appreciate and thank each one of our amazing volunteers for all they do for those in need.
